Type 2 Diabetes – Is Skipping Meals A Good Idea for Diabetics?

It has become common to start skipping meals when there is an intention to lose weight. The idea behind it is simple: by eating less, there will be a larger caloric deficit which will lead to quicker weight loss. Does it work? Yes. But just because skipping meals can be useful does not mean you should do it. If you did not know already, there are issues involved with skipping meals – some of which may make weight loss more difficult.

When all is said and done you should do what suits you. Skipping meals might work for you and not for someone else, and vice versa. As with any piece of health advice, you should weigh your options and come to your own decision. When it comes to skipping meals for weight loss it is no different. Try it out for yourself.

1. Many people intentionally skip breakfast for weight loss purposes or because of lack of time. The latter is an excuse – unless you work 60 to 70-hour weeks you are fully capable of waking up half an hour earlier in the morning to eat breakfast.

2. As for those who intentionally skip breakfast, doing so has a price. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is relevant for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics, especially those who take insulin. Also, skipping breakfast can increase hunger for the rest of the day to the extent above a healthy appetite…

  • if the primary goal is weight loss, what is the point in skipping breakfast if it causes you to overcompensate for the rest of the day?
  • skip lunch, and you may have an insatiable appetite by the end of the day that is likely to make you overeat. Combine overeating with radical changes in blood sugar – which is typical in this situations-and you have a recipe for weight gain as well as higher blood sugar levels.

The bottom line is you should only skip meals if you know what you are doing. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure. Are you fully disciplined when it comes to your diet and eating habits? If there is any doubt, skipping meals is probably not for you.

For most people, it is a balance that proves to be ideal. Three daily meals or two spaced apart with a healthy snack in between works well. You can be successful with weight loss without drastic measures. Keep to a sensible and healthy diet, and you will not need to skip meals to make progress.
