Gout Diet: What foods to eat and what foods to avoid!

Diet plays a significant role in the prevention and treatment of gout. A right diet for gout is required to help inhibit gout from severely damaging your health.

Why you need a good gout diet?

Your excruciating symptoms of gout are produced by uric acid crystals that have developed in your joint(s), which can develop when you have high content of uric acid in your blood. This occurs either due to the excess uric acid production by the body or kidneys inability to flush out extra uric acid from your body efficiently enough.

Uric acid is produced from the natural breakdown of purine, a substance present in the body’s cells and in almost all foods that we eat. There are a number of foods that contain purine at different levels. Some have high, while some have low levels of purine.

The trick is to recognize those foods that have high or very high levels of purine and avoid consuming them. And supplement with foods that contain relatively low levels of purine. And to help you do this I have listed some of the gout diet foods for you.

Gout diet foods to eat and avoid:

Proteins: Avoid eating proteins that have the highest concentrations of purines. Do not consume purine rich seafood such as sardines, herring, roe, anchovies, mackerel, mussels or scallops, and prefer other kinds of seafood instead. Avoid consuming game meats such as duck, goose and partridge, and do not consume organ meats including heart, liver, kidney, sweetbreads and brains. Instead, opt for proteins that have less purine, including beef, chicken, eggs, lamb, pork and turkey.

Dairy: Drinking fat-free or low-fat milk may lower your risk of gout. Consume 16-24 oz. of dairy every day and incorporate fat-free or low-fat products made from milk, such as cheese, yogurt and ice-cream.

Fruits and vegetables: Fruits provide a variety of valuable nutrients and may help cure or prevent symptoms of gout. Some of the fruits that you can try include berries, cherries and vitamin C rich fruits such as grapefruit, oranges, plums, papaya, mangoes, black currents, strawberries, watermelon and kiwi. Green leafy vegetables are highly recommended for people suffering from gout. Carrot, cucumber, beans (French beans), beet are some of the valuable vegetables for the treatment of gout. Patient should consume vegetable juice like beet, carrot, or French beans juice. If desired, one can combine all these vegetables and prepare a mixed vegetable juice, which also is very efficient for treating gout.

Whole grains: Consume dried beans, lentils and peas. Instead of processed foods, choose fiber-rich foods such as whole wheat breads, wheat germ, oats, bran, cereals, brown rice, quinoa, popcorn and barley. However, if you don’t have a liking for whole grain varieties, go for refined grains such as white rice and white bread. They are low in purines and can be eaten every day.

Water: Another helpful measure in decreasing the occurrence of uric acid crystals is to raise your fluid consumption. Extra fluid can assist to dilute the uric acid in your body and assist to excrete the crystals out of the body. Try to drink plenty of water each day. Keep yourself away from alcohol, especially beer, which contains high levels of purine.
